Denise Nicholas
Where are they now? After Room 222 was cancelled, Denise Nicholas had a string of roles in film comedies with Bill Cosby and Sidney Poitier. She later played feisty councilwoman Harriet DeLong on the TV series “In The Heat of the Night,” a role explored one of the first interracial relationships on prime time when DeLong became the on-screen love interest of Carroll O’Connor’s character Police Chief Bill Gillespie. She also wrote the scripts for six of the series’ episodes and a two-hour “Heat of the Night” TV movie. Now 61, Denise Nicholas recently published her first novel called “Freshwater Road,” about an African-American woman who travels to the south to challenge segregation during the Freedom Summer of 1964.

Didn't even remember her from Room 222. Loved her on In the Heat of the Night. Pretty true stuff about how interracial relationships were viewed in small town South.

I remember seeing her on Room 222 when I was a little kid, but she was amazing as Harriet DeLong on In the Heat of the Night. Loved the fire she brought to that role. She and Carroll O'Connor had off the hinges chemistry together, and the way the writers developed their relationship made you believe that they were truly a couple in love! I just brought Ms. Nicholas' book Freshwater Road...can't wait to read it! God bless her.

I have been watching the Re-runs of “ In The Heat Of The Night”.
I think Ms. Nicholas and Carroll O’ Conner made the cutest
couple on TV and I was happy when they got married.
