Afghan Girl's claim to fame
She was the unknown, unnamed subject of one of the most riveting National Geographic photos ever. Taken in 1986, this teenage refugee was photographed at a refugee camp in Pakistan and known only as the "Afghan girl". Where are they now?![]()
National Geographic photographer Steve McCurry returned to Pakitstan and Afghanistan looking for her in 2003.
She was located living in a remote village in Afghanistan, now in her 30's.
She lives as a traditional moslem woman, wearing a veil. She is married and mother to three daughters. A fourth daughter died in infancy.
