Jim Stafford's claim to fame
By request: "I cannot find any information about what happened to Jim Stafford. He was a singer and comic popular in the early to mid 70's, with hit pop songs such as I don't like spiders & snakes and My Girl, Bill. Briefly he had his own variety show, I think around 1974-75. He was wildly popular for a brief time, then it seems he just dropped off the face of the earth. Can you guys do some research to find out what happened to him?" Where are they now?![]()
HINT: When somebody falls of the face of the earth, start looking in Branson, Missouri.
Stafford had two more hits, Jasper (co-written by Dave Loggins) and Turn Loose Of My Leg, appeared in a Clint Eastwood movie (Every Which Way You Can).
He and wife Bobbi Gentry divorced in 1980. He did the Vegas and county fair circuit before settling in Branson, Missouri in 1990, opening the Jim Stafford Theatre.
