Toni Basil's claim to fame
Mainly a choreographer by trade (her credits in that dept. include American Graffiti), her career took her into acting and singing. She appeared in Easy Rider in 1969, then appeared with the likes of Jack Nicholson and Dennis Hopper in Five Easy Pieces and The Last Movie. Her big hit came via the songwriting duo of Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn, originally titled Kitty when recorded by her in a previous incarnation (her group Racey), the renamed Mickey eventually released on her Word of Mouth album took a belated run up the UK charts to #2, and then ran the US charts to #1 in 1981. Where are they now?
Her follow up albums did not fare well, yielding only minor hits Shoppin' From A to Z and Over My Head (neither of which I can even remember).
She has never stopped being a highly successful choreographer, with over 30 music videos to her credit, numerous tours (David Bowie's Diamond Dogs , Tina Turner) and television commercials.
There is such a thing as the American Choreography Association (the "ACA") and in 1995 she was the first recipient of their Innovator Award, following that up with Outstanding Choreographic Achievement in Television in 1997 and nominated at least twice subsequently for the same honour. (Remember those GAP Khaki ads in the mid-90's? She choreographed those)
